Under-Insured Insurance Agent?

Sunday’s edition of TODAY carried an interesting article which described the story of an insurance agent who battled and won various health catastrophes. The article is available online. There is no doubt that she, along with many other insurance agents, would be using her story as an example to highlight the importance of insurance, which I agree – her experience certainly tells us the importance of insurance. What they would not say is that this is likely an ironic case of an insurance agent being under-insured. I think the importance of insurance is obvious enough from Ms. Jessie Tan’s experience. All credit to her tenacity for pulling through her medical ordeals, but as an insurance consultant herself I am sure she would be first to agree with me that her insurance was absolutely crucial for her to have bounced back. As an adult, I’ve been through many ups and downs in my career path and personal finance journey, not unlike many Singaporeans. From my years as a tied insurance agent turned independent financial adviser, I realised that there are very few sources of proper, unbiased financial advice for working adults to access. Worse, self-styled “financial consultants” are selling products like savings plans and ILPs to the detriment of the clients whose interests they were supposed to serve.
