Know the reasons for losing 86.7% in an investment because the next time it could be you

Did you read the Sunday Times newspaper (22 September 2013, page 35) about an individual who invested $30,000 of CPF money in 2008 and now is worth only $4,000? I reproduce the relevant portion for your convenience:

Q: What is your worst investment to date?

A: It would have to be some China-India related fund which I bought in 2008… I bought it using savings from my Central Provident Fund. But it was a painful lesson as I put more than $30,000 into this product and it is worth only about $4,000 now. I have not bought any more intangible investment products after that experience. I also learnt the hard way, that I should not put my hard-earned money into something I do not understand or have knowledge of, even if it is a recommendation from a friend.
