SINGAPORE SAVINGS BONDS FOR RETAIL INVESTORS

A Savings Bonds programme targeted at retail investors will be launched. Investors can put in a minimum of S$500, and in subsequent multiples of S$500 and hold the investments for ten years. The Savings Bonds’ interest rates will increase over time. Investors can opt for a monthly issuance of their money, or they can choose to withdraw all of their money any time; in both cases with no penalty and with the principal sum and any accrued interest. When I learnt of the announcement, I thought that the government has heard my proposed initiative to celebrate SG50 for retail investors (you can read the post here) . My proposal was to actually allow retail investors to purchase some blue-chip stocks at good discounted prices similar to the time the government has allowed retail investors to buy Singtel shares at good discounted prices.
