Annual Returns of Asset Classes Over the Last 20 Years

As we know, there are multiple asset classes you can invest in for your portfolio, but which asset class gives you the best returns? Deutsche Asset & Wealth Management did some research on the U.S. markets and ranked the annual returns for key indices– which represent the various asset classes — from 1995 to 2014 and these are the results (click below to enlarge):

The key indices used for this report: So what does the research tell you?
  1. As you can see, no asset class stays on top (or at the bottom) for long. Certain asset classes do well in certain years and not so well in other years.
  2. Equity gave the highest annual returns 10 out of 20 years in the study, which goes to show you that stocks, in general, still give you the best asset growth.
