Status Symbol

Mobile phones have transcended the realm of communication convenience to become a status symbol in our society. Within a short span of two decades, the handheld device has evolved from the big, clunky and hideous predecessor into the small, sleek and curvy descendant today. Despite its ugliness, the brick-shaped "cellular" was once considered an object of luxury and adoration during the era of pagers.  Not many people can afford a handset.  The Chinese coined an affectionate moniker for the phone - “大哥大” or "Big Brother". With great strides in technological advancement, the mobile phone shrunk in size, became "smart", went mainstream and got commoditized.  Now nearly everyone can own a mobile phone, with little or no money down if you sign a generous subscription package with the telecommunication company ("telco").
