CPF is our version of a pension plan, as everyone knows. The system is imperfect but it has many benefits to us, the common citizens of Singapore.
There have been some changes to the system recently. Firstly, employer contribution is increased to 17% since Jan 2015. Although this does not sound like much, on a base salary of $3000 an additional $30/month will translate to $21,000 difference in 30+ years time when we retire, assuming you forever stay at a $3000 salary (unlikely), contribution and interest rates stay the same. That’s a heck lot of difference for 1%!
Currently, CPF interest rates are at 2.5% for OA and 4% for SA, with an additional 1% for the first $60,000 balance. It’s kind of confusing and changing quite often, but generally only to our benefit. The 4% floor was extended to end-2016 recently.
