It makes a difference whether or not your partner is in with you for the long haul.
I am a firm believer that our Significant Other (SO) can make or break our future. If you are thrifty but your SO spends money like there is no tomorrow, chances are a conflict will happen sooner or later. If you love going out with your friends but your SO prefers to stay at home, the marriage will not likely last long. (I know of a real life example which had unfortunately led to divorce.)
Between my SO and me, thankfully we are on the same page for most matters, one of which concerns our retirement. This was affirmed recently over a meal.
