What really causes poverty

I just read this article on the train today. This author, John Cheese, has contributed to the site long enough for me to know about his background. His father was an alcoholic, and his parents bordered on neglect, and he stumbled around in poverty in adulthood until he managed to write articles and pull himself out of it. I applaud him, really. In the article, there are lots of contradictions that stand out immensely. Firstly is that his parents smoke and drink and yet can’t afford to buy laundry soap. Not to mention, they use the laundromat to wash their clothes. Slightly smarter people would either 1) get an old washer together with a few neighbours and share it or 2) wash the clothes by hand.
