FTSE ST Mid Cap Index Extended 5 Yr Gain to 46% in 2016 YTD

The FTSE ST Mid Cap Index is a free float adjusted market-capitalisation weighted index representing the performance of the mid-capitalised companies trading listed on the SGX Mainboard. The average market capitalisation of a FTSE ST Mid Cap Index constituent is S$2.5 billion. With no changes at the most recent rebalance, effective today’s open, there remains 40 constituents in the FTSE ST Mid Cap Index. In the 2016 YTD, the FTSE ST Mid Cap Index generated a 7.3% total return, taking its five year total return to 45.5%. In the YTD, the five best performers of the FTSE ST Mid Cap Index were ARA Asset Management (+49.1%), Yanlord Land Group (+38.1%), United Engineers (+37.5%), SATS (+34.1%) and Venture Corporation (+28.3%). The five stocks have a combined market capitalisation of S$14.3 billion, and averaged a year-to-date total return of 37.4%. The FTSE ST Mid Cap Index is made up of Singapore listed stocks that  are below the top 70%, but within the top 90% of the broad Index Universe by full market capitalisation. The FTSE ST Mid Cap Index is a free float adjusted market-capitalisation weighted index representing the performance of the mid-capitalised stocks trading on the SGX Mainboard, which pass the size, free float, and liquidity screens. Following the most recent quarterly rebalance, effective the open today, there continues to be 40 constituents that make up the Index. This compares to a total of 30 stocks that make up the Straits Times Index (STI) - which includes six constituents mutual to both Indices. The FTSE ST Mid Cap Index has a combined market capitalisation of S$100.4 billion, which implies an average size of S$2.5 billion for the constituents. The FTSE ST Mid Cap Index has gained 7.3% in the 2016 year through to the 16 December close, taking the five year total return to 45.5%. The 7.2% year-to-date total return for the FTSE ST Mid Cap Index compared to a 5.6% total return for the MSCI AC Asia Pacific Mid Cap Index in SGD terms. In the year thus far, the five best performers of the FTSE ST Mid Cap Index were ARA Asset Management, Yanlord Land Group, United Engineers, SATS and Venture Corporation. These five stocks have a combined market capitalisation of S$14.3 billion, and represent 16.1% of the Index. Together, they averaged a 37.4% total return over the period. Of the 10 largest constituent weights, nine were also amongst the 10 biggest weights of the Index in January. UOL Group has replaced Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Holdings in the 10 biggest weights, bringing the average total return of the 10 biggest weights in the year-to-date to 16.8%. The 10 FTSE ST Mid Cap stocks that were the 10 biggest weights in January (includes Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Holdings rather than UOL Group) averaged a year-to-date total return of 14.5%.
