"Jobless for almost a year and losing my mind."
By A Singaporean Stockmarket Investor (ASSI)  •  September 6, 2017
Reader: I stumbled on your blog last month when searching for ways to make my savings last longer. There are many other blogs on money but your blog just feels more real to me. We are about the same age and also single but, unlike your frugal ways, I have always had the good life. To be honest, I used to laugh at people like you. As I have been jobless for almost a year, I don't laugh now. I really regret now. Looking back, I really did not need to spend so much money on my flat, my car and on looking good. Hi AK,

This is a very sensible advice.

Being retired myself, I observe that many of life-frustrations are borne out of expectations. In this disruptive world, being senior ( assuming one has 30-40 years of work experience) becomes a liability; you expect to be paid more, you probably are in denial, and there is also the ego trait.

I know of an ex-colleague who used to be earning 8-10k a month, today prefer to sit at home, not because he wants to retire but he can’t find any employer who is willing to pay him at or near his expectation. It was two years since…fortunately, he has the means to do so.

I sincerely believe our life must not be dictated by circumstances but by our deliberate plan. Like your good self, your life plan was in order and today you benefit from it. I, too choose to retire happily despite a number of very lucrative offers. I am able to because I too lived a frugal life when young.

      Hi AK and Fred,

Thanks for sharing. I constantly remind myself that my career lies in my own hands and I am not going to let the company dictate me. Of course, there are times where it is beyond my control especially as I get older. Hence, in addition to keeping myself relevant to the market, it is also important to build up my finances.
