What Is A Stock Index?

A stock index is a collection of companies that are grouped together as a measure on how the stock market and the economy is faring. Most major exchange would have one benchmark index that tracks the performance of the stock market.

Some of the common indices in Asia are:

  • Hong Kong: Hang Seng Index (30)

The main index in Hong Kong is the Hang Seng Index. It is a market capitalization weighted index of thirty of the largest companies listed on the Hong Kong Exchange. You can find the list of the 30 companies here.

  • Singapore: Straits Times Index (30)
