Value investing is an overused word in the investment world, with some tossing it around without appreciating its meaning. Or worse, for marketing sake. Think Oprah’s “
You get a car” moment, now substitute that with “
You are a value investor”.
So, what is a value investor? Or maybe we should first touch on, what is an investment?
I would go with the traditional Benjamin Graham & David Dodd’s definition – “
An investment operation is one which, upon thorough analysis, promises safety of principal and an adequate return. Operations not meeting these requirements are speculative.” More than 70 years later and it’s still pretty legit.
