Market Trends (Sell In May and Go Away?)

We are near to May again and I have been updating my records for STI (Singapore Index) since 3 years back on this anomaly. Here is an extract of a write up that I have penned last year and I will be adding the latest data point.

For a start, I did an eyeball screen of the performance of STI from the end of April till June for the past 17 years with the starting point being 2002.

Here are my findings, out of 17 years:

11 years are down- 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2018.

2 years are up- 2003 and 2007

4 years are flat- 2005, 2009, 2014 and 2017.

For 2018, it was a down year though the S&P (US index) was flat. So we have 11 down years during the May period since 2002.
