What A Priest Taught Me About The Meaning Of Work

WOW. You guys are awesome. After last week’s post “Is Your Work A Necessary Evil?”, you sent me dozens of long, well-written answers to my questions. THIS IS WHY I LOVE HAVING A BLOG. But today’s post isn’t about financial freedom. Instead, I wrote this post because I found a fascinating invisible script among some answers I received this week. See if you can spot it: “A meaningful job might not pay as well. If (I take up a meaningful job), I would have to make significant adjustments to my current lifestyle.”  “Maybe you want a fulfilling job; would you...

Is Your Work A Necessary Evil?

So I was hoping you could help me out with something. I’ve been pondering it all weekend and I just can’t figure it out. Usually, when this happens, I sit down and do a brain dump of all the thoughts swirling in my brain. Then I organise it, write several drafts, find a nice picture, and boom – we get another blogpost. But after writing all Sunday, I still couldn’t get my head around it. Maybe you can help me out. Here’s the thing: We talk a LOT about “financial freedom” these days. Specifically, financial freedom refers to the...

A Singapore Millennial’s Take On Avocado Toast

Poor Tim Gurner. He’s the Australian millionaire who recently got destroyed online for claiming that millennials would be able to afford their own homes if they just stopped spending money on “smashed avocados and $4 coffee.” Millennials around the world were up in arms, firing back with some (hilarious) sarcastic replies: I was gonna put a down payment on a house last year but then I spent $44,000 on avocado toast https://t.co/SvSEisua71 — Jennifer Albright (@albrightjc) May 15, 2017 poor person eats crappy cheap food: YOU’RE UNHEALTHY & A STRAIN ON THE SYSTEM poor person eats fresh fruit: THIS IS...

How To Find The Famous Three Blue Domes In Santorini

When my wife and I were honeymooning in Santorini, we knew that we had to take that picture of the famous 3 blue domes. Yes, Santorini has dozens of blue-domed churches, but there’s only ONE place where you can take that famous picture you see on virtually every Santorini postcard. You know the one I’m talking about: Credit: Kenneth J. Garcia – flickr You would think that such a famous landmark would be clearly signposted along the main tourist belt – no such luck. It turns out that while the blue domes are relatively easy to find, finding the right spot to take that...

New Talk: Investing With Less Stress

Last week, my wife and I flew into Athens airport where we were connecting to another flight to Santorini. We planned a 2-hour connection window – usually more than enough time – but our inbound flight into Athens was late. Uh-oh. To make matters worse, we ran into a yuuuuuuge queue at immigration. There were just 2 counters open for 500 passengers. We stood in line, checking our watches every few minutes, mentally WILLING the queue to move faster so we wouldn’t miss our flight. Gah. Nothing feels worse than knowing you have absolutely no control over a stressful situation. Sometimes, that’s what...

How It Felt To Fly On The Singapore Airlines Suites

Last week, my wife and I flew Suites on Singapore Airlines for the first time for our honeymoon. We did it by redeeming our miles (here’s how to do it – though some of the info is outdated), because we couldn’t afford to pay full price for it. It was awesome, although I felt like a kid who had sneaked into a cocktail party for millionaires – like I wasn’t supposed to be there. Now, here’s the thing: I hate reading “influencer” posts with beautiful, filtered pictures of their VIP experiences with captions like “The perfect place to catch up on my reading” #blessed #wanderlust #sponsored. Social media has...

Automate Yo’ Social Media

Heyyyyaaa! I know, I know, I’ve been away for awhile now. No, I’m not dead (yet). I haven’t posted for several weeks because work has been crazy busy in the past month: 3 countries, lots and lots of meetings, a bunch of presentations, and my wife got baptised over the weekend (Yay!). I’m won’t bore you with the details, but I wanted to let you know that I’m still alive and kicking Anyhoo, I thought I’d start blogging again with a light breezy post, on a quick lifehack you can use if you manage multiple social media accounts. The Problem:...

Creating Isn’t Easy

One of my favorite movie scenes of all time comes from the film Limitless. Bradley Cooper plays Eddie – a down-and-out loser who’s struggling in his career as a writer. He comes across NZT-48 – a “smart drug” that lets him access 100% of his brain instead of the usual 10% (this is a myth, but hey, it’s a movie). He swallows the pill, and suddenly he’s the most productive, creative and prolific person in the world: A lot of people think that the act of creating is like taking NZT-48. For example, when my friends ask me about what it’s...
