When couples have different views on finance

Sarah has a husband who is uninterested in all things financial. He doesn’t care about insurance, investing, financial planning, etc. What he earns every month goes into his savings account with POSB and only leaves when he spends it. Sarah, however, is financially savvy, and asks that she be allowed to manage their money – she plans to put their combined earnings to work for them. She also gives him advice on what type of insurance to buy. “Sure,” he says. “Go right ahead, love.” Sarah has a brother – Sean – who is also married. Discussions about finance...

A bit of trading while I wait…

Hey guys, just a quick update on what I’ve been doing – seeing as how blue chips are pretty expensive right now, I’ve been pouring my warchest into doing a bit of trading while I wait for prices to come down, In my last post, I liquidated all my Silverlake Axis (5CP.SI) shares after getting a small profit. My intentions were to use the cash I had following the sale to build my blue-chip portfolio back up again. In the following weeks, I saw Silverlake climb past 0.70. As of today, Silverlake hit a high of 0.73, before closing...

Silverlake Axis: A Brief Interlude

I’d originally planned to get this post up a lot sooner than I did (especially since I have a preference for posting as soon as possible after a trade), but work, Pokemon Go, and Overwatch have been keeping me well occupied. It’s been a while since I parked some cash in Silverlake Axis (5CP) at 0.575, with short-term trading in mind while other opportunities presented themselves. A couple of days ago, with the price reaching a recent high of 0.625, I decided to take profit at 0.62 (resulting in a 7-8% return) and adopt a wait-and-see approach. I missed such...

Re-Visiting OCBC – When opportunity knocks twice

Weeks ago, Brexit left stock prices volatile – bank stocks were no exception. I did a short write-up on OCBC Bank in the last week of June, explaining that there was a short window of opportunity to pick up shares at $8.20+. The price rallied in the following weeks, barely crossing $9.00 in late July, so congratulations to those who’ve made a bit of coin trading OCBC stock. Now, another event has shaken the market – this whole thing with Swiber’s USD 700m loan with DBS has affected bank stocks. Let me just give you the cliffnotes of what happened: Swiber, a...

Speculating on Silverlake Axis

Recently, I mentioned that I’d sold off a few of my holdings with the idea of picking them up on the cheap later on, when the market weakened. So, since I had some spare cash lying about, I thought I’d do some short-term trading with Silverlake Axis (5CP).  The banking software provider’s stock price closed at 0.585 on Friday (15th Jul), a far cry from its days above $1.00 before a short-seller’s report was published. The price hasn’t recovered since. The company’s 2Q16 profits were nothing to shout about, with a 3% drop from its Q1 earnings. Silverlake is...

To do list – Singtel, SPH, Peaky Blinders & Pokemon GO

There are a few things I’d like to get done during the week. This is typically what I do with certain blue-chip stocks – I try to get them cheap, wait for one dividend payout, then hope the price rises enough for me to get some capital gain. I sell them off, and since my stocks usually pay dividends bi-annually, there’s a decent amount of time for me to wait before picking them back up again. See you guys again soon. The market dipped at the beginning of the year – I managed to pick up SPH and Singtel...

Time to pick up some OCBC shares?

Just a short write-up – I’ve maintained that a portfolio should be diversified to reduce risk. The old adage of eggs and only one basket holds true for me – I’ve been wanting to add some Bank shares to my portfolio for a while, but I always thought they were too expensive. The time to finally do so might be here. Brexit has left a swathe of market volatility in its wake – stocks on our own SGX have not been left untouched. However, where there’s volatility in the market, there is also opportunity. So OCBC Bank’s Q1 results...

What’s It Gonna Be – Brexit or Bremain?

Just wanted to pen some thoughts down over breakfast (and make the obligatory EU referendum post) – I don’t see Brexit occurring, honestly. As of 20 minutes ago, preliminary results point to Bremain having a slight lead, albeit not a remarkably decisive one. Other incidents, including the murder of Jo Cox, should sway the vote in favour of Bremain, leading to Britain remaining in the Eurozone. The outcome will be known in just a few hours. Brexit or Bremain? But what does this imply for us, domestically? Forex trading has definitely been affected – financial institutions and retailers were...

On Fear and Greed

Target price. Stop-loss. Sell down. Flushing. Pump and dump. Familiar with any of these terms? Warren Buffett’s famous lesson on fear and greed was “Be fearful when others are greedy, and be greedy when others are fearful.” It makes sense, if you think about it. Thing is, when you’re in the moment, and either emotion hits you like a tidal wave, it can be hard to stick to your guns. You, in a panic, call your broker and tell him to get rid of all your shares, in the hope that you won’t be the last dunce clutching on...

Me, My Portfolio, And…A Portfolio Update (End May)

Okay, so I think it’s high time I did a portfolio update. I just thought I’d use the time to explain the different facets of my portfolio as well. I know I haven’t been very active on here lately, but I have a really good reason – if you guys haven’t caught Black Sails yet, you guys need to start watching. An R-rated Pirates of the Carribean-meets-Game of Thrones prequel to Treasure Island. Can’t go wrong, honestly. But I digress. I wanted to start afresh with my portfolio – I sold everything I had last year, and I began...

A couple of things I took away from the SinoGrandness Q1 Report

So Sino Grandness released their Q1 results earlier today – rather impressive results all around, to be honest. Steady increases across all product segments, with decent coverage and growth with regards to their Garden Fresh subsidiary. Higher revenue reported across all segments in the Q1 report. (Source: SinoG site). Anyone interested in checking out the reports for themselves can find them on the SGX website here. For those of you who aren’t interested in scrolling through the full report, here are the cliffnotes: – Q12016 profit experienced a 233.0% increase from Q12015, – revenue from their beverage segment increased by...

"I’ve been in banking for five years, and I don’t have any investments, because…"

You could consider this post a “Part Two” of sorts in my Investment 101 series of posts. I caught up with a few people over the past couple of weeks, and what I heard inspired me to write this, with permission from the story owners, of course. My previous post here extolled the virtues of investing early and consistently. To recap – as young investors, you have a long horizon, and a bigger margin of error. Yes, you will be taking some measure of risk when you invest – but if something goes belly up, you will have time to recover. Proportion your...

Stop me if you’ve heard this – "Earn 5k a month, just sitting on your couch! You won’t believe how easy it is!"

So stop me if you’ve seen any of these floating around the net. Word of warning: you might have actually seen one of these in the last few minutes. “I earned 3k while doing nothing! All I did was sign up for a simple course…” “Would you want to make money from your sofa? Click here to find out more!” It’s within your grasp! Everything is within your grasp, they promise – easy money and an even easier life. No more rat race, no more fuss, no more snobby relatives looking down their noses at you during Chinese New...

Here’s hoping Sino Grandness stays fresh – Portfolio Update

Here’s hoping Sino Grandness stays fresh. Garden Fresh. Sorry for the bad puns. I apologize because I haven’t had a chance to update this blog – this week has been rather rough for me. I did manage to watch the market for a bit, however. Allow me to bring your attention back to Sino Grandness, the loquat juice producer that I covered some time ago in another article. To make this short and sweet – I picked up more shares for the same reasons I listed in my last article: 1) Sino Grandness has come to an agreement with...

So my friend thought it was a good idea to follow an analyst’s Target Price

Sit down, everyone – I’m going to tell you a story. See, I met this guy during my army days, and he opened a trading account after we left. “This is how to make your money grow,” he told me. “I can give my parents a treat, I can buy my girlfriend new stuff, etc, etc.” Long story short, he had some spare cash lying around, he was new to stocks and trading, and he was hoping to make some money. What happened to him was one of the things that inspired me to start this blog – I...
