Valentine’s Day is coming up on 14 Feb and I believe it is the season of gift buying again. Most couples will probably be wondering what gifts to buy each other. I remember the days of my youth when I had to literally crack my head to figure out what gifts to buy. I am not a good gift buyer actually.

If you asked me how I will buy my gifts, I will probably tell you that I will buy them online. Shopping online has almost become second nature to me. I can surf the net in the comforts of my home and still literally browse through the many online shops like Ebay to buy a gift. And I think this trend of shopping online will perhaps get more and more common to many people.

Another thing I realised is probably that married couples don’t really celebrate Valentine’s Day in …

The overall stock market has rallied nicely in Jan and continues to do so in Feb. I saw this as a chance to take a bit of profits and also switch out from underperforming stocks. I sold a little of CapitaRetailChina Trust at over 10% gain. I also sold a small portion of Fortune REIT at over 20% gain. Overall, most of my stocks have reported great results, with increasing profits and dividends as well. You can read the reports of major holdings: Ascendas REIT, CapitaMall Trust, Mapletree Commercial Trust and Fraser’s Centerpoint Trust.

In such a broad rally, stocks which remain weak are well, pretty …

So here is the thing this run up since the end of December have been up and up for 1 month. Many have wanted to add during the correction, but there just wasn’t one.

Reminds me of the bull run from 2009. It teaches you that

in a bull run, the pull backs are small and infrequent

the largest part of the bull run may occur over 10 to 20 days

you underperformed when you couldn’t get leg in fast enough

if you see companies that are valued and with a margin of safety you should systematically own it

My portfolio currently underperforms due to being yield heavy. I am comfortable in this 48% invested position. If the market continues to go up, picking up value stocks that yields should still do well. 50% of my returns will come from dividends.

Having a few “strikers” will lets you keep up …

On Thursday, SGX broke the resistance at $7.27 and closed at $7.29 with HIGH volume of 4.95 million shares traded.

A long lower shadow occurred. This is typically a bullish signal (particularly when it occurs near a low price level, at a support level, or when the security is oversold).

Three white candles occurred in the last three days. Although these candles were not big enough to create three white soldiers, the steady upward pattern is bullish.

Both RSI & MACD are bullish though RSI already in overbought region.

Important Resistance of SGX: $7.41

Immediate Support of SGX: $7.27

Currently prices are well above 20/50/100/200 days MA.

Prices broke the critical resistance at $7.27 with high buying pressure today but only closed slightly higher than the important level.

Due to the overbought situation, we would advise to sell once $7.27 …

Today CapitalMallAsia and Yangzijiang did us proud. And I would like to dedicate this post to people who are vested with either of the stocks.

Today was the first time CapMallAsia surged through ahead of my average price which makes me overwhelmed and surprised (that they are up 10% at one point near the closing bell). With results coming up this Friday, hope that CMA could continue to surge ahead to greater heights tomorrow and Friday.

As for Yangzijiang, it is currently the only stock lagging in my portfolio and by a miles too. Hope that it is able to surge ahead and close the gap nearer to my average price.

While I do encourage people to invest for the long run, there are times when I move from a passive stance to a slightly more active stance. Without having to invest more money into my portfolio, stock switching allows me to make my portfolio work harder and generate more returns for me.

Rebalancing

This is generally used by people who have a portfolio of stocks which they are comfortable with and would prefer that they remain at set percentages of the portfolio. Some Stocks may have run up significantly. Value wise, these stocks become too high a percentage from asset allocation perspective, rebalance by selling them and buying undervalued counters. For example, if you have stock A, B, C and D in your portfolio which are 25% each in weight. If C goes up dramatically, it may become A – 20%, B – 20%, C – 40%, D – 20%. …

First of all, no one is more surprised than me on the STI’s recent rise from this January 2012!

Being 50% vested, I am not complaining! A red-packet from the market for Chinese New Year!

Of course I can take some money off the table (like some of my fellow bloggers in my blog list); if and when the STI rediscover gravity, I can always buy back at the lower prices – now that’s more easily said than done!

Unfortunately (or fortunately!) most of my core holdings will be declaring or paying their dividends to me in the next coming weeks.

Furthermore, selling now will take my vested share to below 50%… Since I am still totally clueless to which direction the STI will go (hands up for those who saw this Jan 2012 rally coming during Dec 11), I better continue in neutral gear. This way, I am always 50% right!

LOL! How’s that for positive thinking!?

This morning at 10:15 am, I shorted the SIMSCI (STI index futures).

It’s not a short! It’s a hedge ;)

I better “hedge” myself knowing how some people have mistaken notions about shortists… (It’s not funny – I know! Throw me a bone here lah)

It’s not a perfect hedge, but it’s close enough.

If STI plunges tomorrow, some of my paper profits will be “rescued” by my “hedged” position in the SIMSCI.

The price I am paying will be the “capped” paper profits if STI were to continue defying gravity.

From now onwards, I won’t be participating in the STI’s rise fully anymore as each rise will be offset by my “loss” in the SIMSCI.

What I’ve done is to effectively “locked up” my paper profits up till this morning. I’ve taken my money off the table in another way. “Enough” is good enough for me!

I can also do it with CFD (contract for difference) index. It’s just that I am leaving my CFD powder dry for shorting some stocks I’ve recently put on my short watch list. Just in case Israel strikes…

OK, derivatives and OTC (over-the-counter) products are not suitable for everyone (nor should they be).

To continue my Goldilocks and the three bears analogy, if we don’t try ourselves, how do you know what’s “just right” for us?

Some are more suited to be specialists; while I am more suited to be a jack-of-all-trades ;)

And are you a specialist because you know yourself well, or are you one by default because you just never ventured beyond equities?

It is the consequent of central banks printing money as European Central Bank pledged to lend out 489B EUROS to ease potential credit crunch in Dec 2011. This is as good as providing cheap credit to banks which enable them to lend out more cheaply for investments. This money are flowing to Asia and emerging market regions. Just last week, funds investing in regional equities drew a net inflow of US$430M. This is the 4th straight month of inflows to Asian regions, which explains the 5th straight week of regional equities market appreciation.
