Over the weekend, I have given some thought about ETF investing and whether my current portfolio needs some restructuring. Don’t get me wrong, I think ETF investing is a great strategy because it offers diversification and low expense ratios. There are tons of articles online explaining the merits of this strategy which I won’t repeat here.
However, let’s not blindly diversify for the sake of it as not all ETFs are created equal. To be specific, the STI Index has been a really bad investment.
We hear proponents of ETF investing say that the market will only go up in the long run. However, the STI Index has a return of -25% over a 5-year period. As a comparison, the S&P 500 has a return of 36%.
COVID-19 is a wake-up call to us as investors to re-evaluate our investment portfolio. D
