The numbers came out this week. Singapore’s total fertility rate dropped to 0.87 in 2025 — a record low that makes us one of the least reproductive countries on the planet.
For every 100 Singaporeans today, we will have 44 children. And 19 grandchildren. That’s not a typo. Our leaders gloomily told us that our citizen population will start shrinking by the early 2040s if nothing changes.
Only 27,500 babies were born last year. The lowest in our recorded history. One in five Singaporeans is now aged 65 or older. Up from one in eight just a decade ago. By 2030, one in four Singaporeans will be elderly.
As an investment nerd, the question in my head is: how do we position our portfolios in a country that’s getting older, faster, with fewer young people to support them?
