MacBook Neo: Why This S$849 Laptop Is A Bigger Deal Than You Think

Once in a while, I write topics which involves spending money, which makes it relevant to personal finance, right? I have been a ThinkPad guy for as long as I can remember. My wife and I each have a Lenovo ThinkPad T-series, and both cost around S$1,500-1,600 each when we bought them. No frills, just solid, reliable work machines. I have always associated MacBooks with premium products, and for most of their history, that association was accurate. Then Apple went and released the MacBook Neo at S$849. I had to look twice! S$849 For A MacBook S$849 for the 256GB base model. S$729 if you’re a student! That’s budget laptop and Chromebook territory, except it’s a MacBook running full macOS with Apple’s build quality. Here’s the thing that got me thinking. As recently as this year, you can still find brand new MacBook Air M1 (2020) and MacBook Air M2 (2022) on Lazada and Shopee for S$900-1,000.
