I Got a Big Windfall! Lessons learnt!
What if I told you that one of the best investment decisions I ever made... was doing absolutely nothing?
For more than a decade, I couldn't even log into my CDP account. I had forgotten my password, got busy with life, and simply left my investments alone.
Recently, someone asked me about my old OCBC shares. Out of curiosity, I logged into my CDP account using Singpass.
To my surprise, I discovered not only my OCBC investment, but also 25,000 Singtel shares and several other long-forgotten holdings.
That's when it struck me.
The greatest enemy of compounding isn't inflation.
It isn't market crashes.
It isn't even recessions.
It's us.
We check our portfolios every day.
We panic when markets fall.
We get excited when markets rise.
We trade too much.
We interrupt the very process that creates wealth.
Compounding needs only two things:
Time... and uninterrupted time.
The less often you interfere with quality investments, the more opportunity they have to grow.
Sometimes, the best investment strategy isn't finding the next hot stock.
It's buying a great business... and then getting out of its way.
As Warren Buffett famously said:
"The stock market is a device for transferring money from the impatient to the patient."
Perhaps the secret isn't just patience.
Perhaps it's becoming so patient... that you almost forget you own it.
Discipline compounds. Euphoria does not.
