STI pulls back as US bond yields surge to multi year highs. Here’s what moved markets this week and what investors should watch next.
Does getting wealthier make us more financially secure?
At first glance, the answer seems obvious. If the value of our savings and investments is rising, we should feel more financially secure too.
But recent data made me think about this differently. Singapore household net worth grew 6.8% year on year in 2Q 2026. While household assets rose 7.0%, debt grew even faster at 8.3%, driven by higher mortgages and personal loans.
So getting wealthier does not necessarily tell us the full story about our financial security.
For me, financial security is not just about how much we own. It is also about how much we owe, whether we have enough money set aside for our needs, and whether our investments are helping us achieve what we want from our wealth.
This feels particularly relevant with interest rates moving again....
