Snowballing of dividends – Super August

Despite the stock market roller coaster ride in August, it is still a good month for dividends as many companies are paying dividends in August.  15 of my 23 counters paid dividends in August and produced the second highest monthly dividend harvest record for me (highest is in May 2015). Dividends collected in August: 1. Starhub: $335 2. SATS: $270 3. SingTel: $234.33 4. CDLHT: $140.70 5. Suntec Reit: $122.50 6. Keppel Corp: $120 7. CMT: $108.40 8. Starhill Global: $103.20 9. SIA Engg: $85 10. SPH Reit: $78.30 11. Frasers CT: $60.72 12. Keppel DC Reit: $32.04 13. FCOT:...

Bloodshed at the Fortress Gate…

Fierce battle with the Bear Army at the Fortress Gate today. My stock portfolio values had fallen more than $7k today.  The total portfolio value finally fell below the total invested capital value.  Reservist units (dividends) are activated, and with these reinforcement, the Bear Army is temporarily repelled. (The portfolio is still positive when including dividends). My “S” battalion suffered heavy casualties fighting the Bear Army.  The significant ones: 1. SPH (my foundation stock) wounded (value fell below average cost); 2. Starhill Global Reit and Suntec Reit wounded (value fell below average cost); 3. SPH Reit seriously injured (value...

Fixed Deposit Rates Update – 1.70% P.A.at CIMB Bank

First some clarifications: Fixed Deposit is not for real investment.  My review on Singapore’s FD is limited to S$50,ooo and below; and tenure term not exceeding 12 months.  Fixed Deposit is for parking the emergency fund and allowing immediate access to the fund when needed.  These are also based on the following considerations: Singapore’s Deposit Insurance Scheme maximum coverage up to S$50,ooo only. 2. Long tenure term will potentially affect your cash-out value for your emergency fund, as you may suffer a penalty fee for early withdrawal. Back to the update: CIMB Bank’s 12-months FD rates of 1.70% p.a. for S$50,000 is currently...

Bit-by-bit Strategy – small steps adding up

As a small investor, my strategy is to build up my stock portfolio bit-by-bit every month.  Let’s see how does this strategy work out for me? This is a boring strategy.  It takes patient and perseverance.  Month by month after pay-day, I split my money into 3 pots – Investment, Warchest and Expense.  There is also a very small 4th pot – for the dividends received.  From the Investment and Dividend pots, I will buy into one or two stocks every month.  In the beginning, it was quite difficult because of the big “1000” lot size and the small...

My First Insurance Policy

I bought my first insurance policy on the first week of my army recruit days.  I had no financial and insurance knowledge at that time.  On hind sight, probably I will not buy such policy. It is just a simple life policy and does not include any medical illness benefits.  Yes, it is still in force. And miraclely I still have the same insurance agent after so many years. The early “benefit” of this policy was only paying 50% of the premium for the two-and-a-half years of my army life.  The full premium will kick-in only after my army...

Past Bear Attacks (Part 2)

Actually I have intended that this Part 2 follows Part 1 immediately.  But it was delayed due to the national mourning for the passing of our founding father Lee Kuan Yew.  I felt that it would be disrespectful if I talked about bear at that point in time. Now, to carry on from Part 1: 2003 – SARS The defeated bear of 2001 returned with vengeance just two years later and this time it was not only financial threatening, but also life threatening. This was the SARS bear, rumoured to be from China. Market/Economy: The economy was scary this...

Finally HPH Trust attained breakeven

I have HPH Trust since its IPO day.  This stock is like a permanent submarine and has never come close to my average price for the stock. However, it has the highest dividend yield among the STI component stocks.  That is why I leave it there in my portfolio.  HPH Trust produced the highest dividend yield in my portfolio for 2014. After collecting the March dividend last week and together with the strengthening of the US dollar, HPH Trust finally crossed my breakeven point. HPH Trust stock price is VERY volatile and there is HIGH chance that they may...

Past Bear Attacks (Part 1)

Many people say we are long due for another bear attack.  These posts (Part 1 and 2) are in memory of the bears that I have encountered in the past. 1997 – Asian Financial Crisis First bear that I encountered and directly affected me.  This was the “robbery bear”.  The CLOB shares saga was one of the events in the AFC.  I lost my humble savings in this “club” (CLOB).  One of my colleagues had half a million frozen in the “club”. Market/Economy: Market was bad, economy was bad.  Many companies had retrenchment exercises and many people were affected. ...
