Creating a Bond Ladder

I spent the last few weeks finishing a book bought during Christmas. (I skip some irrelevant chapters in between and focus on the gist of the book).  Considering my workload, this is actually quite an “achievement” and I didn’t have to travel for work in Feb helped tremendously.   Bond Ladder I will assume you know what a bond is. I have blog about a few retail bonds that IPOed last year. You can read about them here.  I am not sure if you had heard of a bond ladder but basically what it means is that you buy a...

The Evolution of An Investor

2016 marks the 30th year that I have been involved in the stock market. The first 12 years were during my schooling days when I monitored stocks for my father while he was working. The next 18 years were when I invested with my own money after graduation. Looking back at these 30 years, it has been a pretty exciting journey. I experienced the market crashes of 1987 (crash for no good reasons), 1989 (ditto), 1990 (Iraqi invasion of Kuwait), 1997/98 (Asian Financial Crisis), 2000-2003 (dot.com bust, Sep 11 terrorist attack, US accounting scandals and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome),...

Two stocks which could ride on the Singapore stocks market rebound

If I am correct, the global stocks markets and Singapore stocks markets should be restaging a rebound (though I am not sure how strong and sustainable the rebound will be) which began yesterday 29 Jan 2016 after the weeks of selling since Dec 2015. Investors should focus on blue-chip stocks, especially those which are oversold. As for offshore and marine stocks, interested investors should consider buying them in tranches as I think it is not easy to tell when oil prices should head up. For recent IPO stocks like Jumbo stock, it may be likely that this stock will...

Secura announced that its entire IPO was 2.2x subscribed but the Company decided to allocate shares to all its public IPO applicants. Investors who applied for 50,000 shares will get 3,000 shares and 6,000 warrants. They definitely make it difficult for these shareholders to sell as such numbers is “neither here nor there”. How Startup Funding Works

What a cool infographic! Just as long we know IPO is for insiders to cash out (sell), we are good to go! Ever wondered if you build up your own company from the ground up with blood and sweat, why on Earth would you dilute and share the future earnings flow of your “baby” to outside freeloaders you don’t even know? And during AGM, these freeloaders got the cheek to tell you how to run your company? There must be an overriding reason for business owners to go the IPO route, when there are alternative vehicles for raising funds for expansion. Do...

7 High Yield REITs and Trusts that looks Interesting to me at the moment

The real estate investment trust (REIT) and business trust is a segment of stocks that resonates well with investors because the underlying idea is something that investors are very well acquainted with. They provide an annual cash flow and a varied degree of growth depending on the underlying assets and when added to the portfolio provides some stability if you are invested in higher volatile small caps. The combination of cash flow and growth gives a total return. For some reference, I came up with a look at the total return since IPO of 2 REITs Keppel REIT and...

Is Privatisation of this stock possible?

Following an article which I have read online, I would think that my previous sharing with readers on the possibility of more privatization of Singapore companies, especially those whose share prices have been lacklustre is still valid. Looking at how TigerAir (IPO price: $1.50) has an exit offer of $0.45, NOL (IPO price: $4) with an exit offer of $1.30; it is still possible for a Temasek-linked company in Sembcorp Marine to be privatized, even though its stock price has languished. For the record, Sembcorp Marine stock traded at $1.72 yesterday (4 Jan 2016), back in year 2011, the...

My Lazy Man Portfolio in 2015 – Who Stole My Dividends?

I was chatting with several Financial Bloggers on how they track their portfolio returns and I was swarmed with a 1001 different metrics e.g. Internal rate of returns (XIRR), yield on cost, yield on price etc. Everyone has their own way of calculating and there was a healthy debate on the pro and cons of each. There are also those who find tracking of their portfolio meaningless and are more interested to know how far they are from their aim of say $1,000/month dividends. After some thought with my trusty Asahi (Photo Credit: Tora-rin) in hand, I decided to settle on...

Digging deeper into ROE

Look at this company’s ROE below: FY 2011  — ROE 72.6% FY 2012 —  ROE 47.7% FY 2013 —  ROE 33.7% FY 2014 —  ROE 25.6% The ROE (return over equities) keeps falling from the 70+% range towards the current 25% range, but it’s still pretty high. Would you say something is wrong? If so, what went wrong? It’s important at this stage to break up the ROE into parts. It’s called Dupont analysis, where ROE is split up into three components, net margin, asset turnover and leverage. If you multiply all the three components together, you’ll get ROE,...

APTT’s 12.5% High Dividend Yield: Check the sustainability of Cash Flow to Payout the Dividend

APTT or Asian Pay Television, used to belong in a Macquarie Infrastructure Trust (MIIF), before they got spun out as APTT. The management is still the same Macquarie folks. The stock IPOed in May 2013 at a IPO price of  $0.97. It currently trades for $0.645. When it IPO, the projected yield was 8.5%. Based on the current distribution of $0.08/yr, the dividend yield is 12.5%. There is a reason I did not add this business trust to my Dividend Stock Tracker, which tracks some of the common better know dividend stocks such as blue chips, REITs and business...
