How can Private University Students Standout in the Job Hunt?

When I graduated a few years back (or was about to graduate), it was downright depressing reading the news on the low percentage of private university (uni) students getting a job and hearing talks about the salary difference compared to local uni salaryman. You can read some of these articles herehere, and here. The more I heard about these preconceived notions, the more defeated I felt. But were these really true? Is it harder for private university students to get a job? Are there discriminations when hiring private uni students? How can I, as a private uni student stand out to get a job?
