China’s National Day Golden Week (黄金周) is one of two week-long holidays in China, and it starts off with commemorating the founding of the People’s Republic of China on 1st October. Historically, Golden Week had existed to encourage the public to spend more and boost the domestic economy, following the Asian Financial Crisis in 1997. The initiative worked – and year after year, Golden Week marked the peak period of consumption as many Chinese use this time to make travels, discretionary purchases, and hold celebrations. This year, Golden Week coincides with the Mid-Autumn Festival and runs from 1st October to 8th October (Thursday).
