I took a day trip to Manhattan with my parents in 2008, when they visited me while I was studying in the US. My mum loves Broadway, so she booked us tickets to watch a matinee. I didn’t have high expectations, since I’d never heard of the show we were watching. I grew even more skeptical when the lights turned down and a dishevelled-looking guy in a baggy red shirt stepped onto the stage, and started rapping.
But the next two hours led to one of the best performances I’d ever seen. I was simply blown away. Unlike other Broadway shows which featured classical ballads, this one was heavy on hip-hop and urban dance. The cast rapped about the struggles of a Dominican American community living in America.
