Defensive Portfolio Plays – Cutting Losses

The DOW came down 791 points (6.45%) last week, Straits Times Index plunged 112.23 (3.61%) on Friday, it was not a pretty sight. The question on everybody’s mind is how low can it go? The answer is much lower. The Dow closed at 11,450 points on Friday, but in March 2009, it was as low at 6,626 points, almost half of what it is now. The Straits Times Index closed at close to 3000 points on Friday, but in March 2009, it was as low as 1,500 points, about 50% of the current. On the flip side, the highest STI has ever gone to was 3,800 points in Oct 2007, while DOW went up close to 14,000 points at its peak in 2007.
