Investment Banks have clients that range from mid to large-sized blue chip companies, mutual funds(unit trusts), hedge funds, family offices, private equity companies, High Net Worth Individuals (sophisticated Investors) and Retail Banks. The Investment Banks have interest in some of their client companies. The clients that do business with the Investment Banks also have financial interest in many of them too, they also invest in the investment banks’ stocks, so it’s like a loop. The people who work in these Investment Banks don’t wake up at 5am, be at the office at six and stay up late nights for no reason. Every area of an investment bank aims to make profits for the bank, they are public companies and are answerable to shareholders.
