From 1988 to 2015, 10 out of 28 years have been down years for the Straits Times (STI) Index

As we move for a year from 3549 to 2845 in the STI Index, for a 19.8% fall, one friend provide me with this interesting tidbit: In the last 27 years, the STI has been negative for the year only 9 times. Sharpest decline was 2008 at -49.4%, next sharpest was 1997 at -31%. Altogether just 4 years with declines greater than -20%. If this year is included, would make it 10 out of 28 years – around 36% I will be interested to know how those other 9 draw down looks like!
